My trip to Nicaragua

The Bridges to Community Canada is a well organized and coordinated effort working on sustainable development projects for families in need in Nicaragua utilizing volunteer resources.

Earlier this year I was privileged to be part of a group of volunteers helping with the construction of homes for deserving families in a community outside Jinotega, Nicaragua.  It was a great learning experience, and team building event.  Despite reading and seeing pictures in the media about the conditions in rural Nicaragua, it was quite different to actually experience being in an environment where just the basic needs of survival – clean water, nutritious food, and a roof over one’s head – are difficult to attain.   It is remarkable what the BTCC is managing to accomplish with their tight operating budget, but they obviously are focusing on what is important.

Regardless of the challenges for the people, however, it was amazing to experience the sense of community of the rural Nicaraguans, how they work together and for their neighbours, and how they appreciate and love life without the material goods we take for granted here in Canada.  It was also very humbling to live and work with this community and experience how very appreciative they are of our help, and their willingness to share with us whatever little they have.

Volunteering with the BTCC, whether as an individual, as part of a family, or a student or corporate group, is certainly a unique opportunity to make a positive difference in the lives of those less fortunate, and feel richly rewarded in return.
